Welcome to Year Five Multicoloured Bunting

Welcome to Year 5

Summer Term 2023

This webpage is dedicated to all the information you will need for children in Year 5.

Reading Plus, Reading Eggs and TT Rockstars challenge

It is really important that your child is accessing Reading Plus/Reading Eggs and TT Rockstars as often as possible through the week. The target for Reading Plus is to complete 5 lessons a week and for TTRockstars, the longer they spend practicing, the better! Each class has a leaderboard which we will be updating weekly based on how many lessons have been completed on Reading Plus or how much time has been spent on Reading Eggs or TT Rockstars. The children are ready for the challenge and we can't wait to see how they get on!

(Your child will have access to either Reading Plus or Reading Eggs and should know which it is that they need to use.)

School Reading Books

Your child will have a reading book from the school library or from the school reading trolley; this is their home reading book that needs to be read at home. Children with books from the school library need to ensure that their book is in school on Tuesday, which is our library day. This will enable them to either renew their book or choose another to take home for the week. If your child is on the reading scheme, they need to read at home daily and bring their book in every day so that it can be signed and changed when needed.

Here is what we will be learning this week:

Week beginning: 15.5.23 2023    Summer 1 Week 4

English

In English this week we will be starting our new unit, which will be non fiction. We will be preparing to write a non-chronological report about polar bears. We will practice by learning about Emperor penguins and how we can create a non-chronological report.

We will be using Cracking Comprehension work where we will be exploring a range of texts and developing children's reading fluency and inferential skills. We will complete some as a class and some independently.

This week in Maths we will be looking at shape, we will be reading and measuring angles. Using estimation skills and protractors. We will be moving onto looking at angels on a straight line, angles in shapes and angles in a full turn.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE continue to practice your times-tables using TT Rockstars or any websites or books!

Foundation Subjects-Science

This week we will be starting our Science unit on humans including animals. We will be learning about the life cycles of animals and how animals and plants reproduce.

PE

Our PE day is on a Tuesday. PE uniform is a plain white T-shirt, black shorts and trainers. In cooler weather plain black joggers and a black plain hoodie may be worn for outside lessons.

REMINDER: The outdoor PE kit consists of plain black joggers and a plain black hoodie. Alternatively a school jumper can be worn. Please save your Dewsbury Rangers/ Shawcross Sharks and dancing club training tops for your own time- thank you.

Swimming

Our swimming sessions are on a Friday. Your class teacher will be in contact with the dates and times of these sessions.  Please check that you are happy with your swimming trunks/ costume.  Swimming caps are essential. Swimming goggles are optional. Ear rings are not prohibited by KAL, but they recommend small studs only.

All children will need a towel. Many children prefer to come to school with their swimming kit already on underneath their uniform (this often helps to speed up the changing procedure) however please ensure that underwear is also packed as several children have realised too late that they have left theirs at home.

Remember you can always practice spellings and times tables by following the links at the bottom of this page.

If you need to speak to the teachers about your child we are glad to chat, but for a more detailed conversation please let the office know and we will call you back- thank you.
